Grove's reply failed or stopped

What to do when Grove shows an error, seems stuck, or you want to stop a reply.

Written by Jack Meyers

Sometimes a reply from Grove fails, or takes a long time. Your work is safe. This article tells you what each message means, and what to do.

When Grove shows an error

Grove shows the error in the chat, with one of these buttons:

  • Retry: sends your message again.

  • Start a new chat: opens a new chat. Your old chat stays in your history.

Message

What to do

"Grove is briefly overloaded — your message is fine. Try again in a moment."

Wait a moment, then click Retry.

"Couldn't process your message — an attachment may be too large or unsupported."

Use a smaller or simpler file. See Files you can attach.

"Couldn't process your message. Try rephrasing it and sending again."

Change the words of your message, and send it again.

"We lost connection to your chat session."

Click Start a new chat, or reload the page.

"We couldn't reach Grove just now."

Wait a moment, and click Start a new chat.

"That message didn't go through."

Send the message again.

"Something went wrong on our side."

Click Start a new chat. If it happens again, contact us.

"This message can't be shown."

Reload the page. The rest of the chat still works.

If Retry is grey, you may have reached your usage limit. See "Usage limit reached".

Stop a reply

While Grove replies, click Stop generating in the message box.

  • Grove stops at its next step. This can take up to about 20 seconds. The chat shows "Stopping…" until then.

  • Grove keeps the part of the reply it already wrote, with a Stopped label.

  • Changes Grove already made to documents stay. To undo them, see See and restore earlier versions.

When Grove seems slow

Grove often reads your documents and code before it replies. You see lines such as "Working on it...", "Thinking this through...", or "A moment longer...". This is normal.

When you start a new initiative, Grove shows "Laying the groundwork...". The first reply can take longer.

You can type while Grove replies. Your message shows Queued, and Grove reads it when it's done.

When Grove seems stuck

Try these, in order:

  1. Wait a minute. Grove may still be working.

  2. Click Stop generating, and send your message again.

  3. Reload the page. If Grove is still replying, you see the reply continue.

  4. Click Start a new chat.

If none of these work, contact us. Tell us the time it happened, and the initiative or project. See Get help from the Grove team.
