Most Grove CLI problems are fixed by one of two commands: grove login or grove upgrade. Find the message you see below.
Sign-in messages
Message | What to do |
"Not logged in. Run | Run |
"Session expired. Run | Run |
"Authentication timed out. Please try again." | You didn't finish signing in within 2 minutes. Run |
"Could not reach WorkOS to check your session" | Grove's sign-in service didn't answer. Check your internet connection, and try again. You don't need to log in again. |
"Could not start the login callback server" | Sign-in needs one of the ports 27183, 27184, or 27185 on your computer. Close the program that uses them, and run |
When you're logged in, grove login shows "Logged in as" and your email address.
Version messages
"grove 1.2.0 is incompatible (server requires ≥ 1.3.0). Run: grove upgrade"
Your CLI is too old to work with Grove. Run:
grove upgrade
Then run your command again.
"newer grove CLI available"
This is only a reminder. Your command still works. Run grove upgrade when it suits you.
"Upgrade timed out"
Check your internet connection, and run grove upgrade again.
"grove: command not found"
The install worked, but your terminal can't find grove. Add this line to your shell startup file (~/.zshrc for zsh, ~/.bashrc for bash):
export PATH="$HOME/.grove/bin:$PATH"
Then open a new terminal.
The CLI also needs Node.js 22 or later. To check your version, run node --version.
Wrong workspace
The CLI works in one workspace at a time. To see where you are, and change it:
grove workspace list
grove workspace switch <workspace>
If you see "No workspaces available," your account doesn't belong to a workspace yet. See I signed in but have no workspace.
Start over
If nothing else works, sign out and in again:
grove logout
grove login
If the problem stays, contact us. See Get help from the Grove team.
