Grove has an MCP server. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way to connect an AI assistant to another app. Any assistant that supports custom MCP connectors can use Grove's tools. To connect one, see Use Grove from your own AI assistant.
Connection details
Address:
https://grovehq.app/api/mcpSign-in: OAuth. The first time your assistant uses Grove, you sign in and approve access.
Workspace: the tools work in the workspace you signed in to.
Access: the tools act as you. Your assistant can see and change only what you can in Grove.
Links: when a tool works on one initiative, project, document, or thread, its result includes a link that opens it in Grove. Archived work has no link, and the result says why.
Time limit: each call can run for up to 85 seconds. A write that timed out may still have landed. Read it back before you try again.
If your sign-in expires, your assistant asks you to sign in again.
Find and read
Tool | What it does |
| Finds initiatives by name or slug, newest first. It can filter by status. |
| Finds projects by name, description, or ID, across the workspace or in one initiative. It can filter by status. |
| Reads an initiative's details, and lists its documents and its Scratchpad. |

| Reads one document of a project or initiative in full, or a project's or an initiative's Scratchpad file. |

These tools change nothing.
Write and organize
Tool | What it does | Asks you first? |
| Replaces a project's summary, its outcomes list, or its Requirements. Creates or changes a Scratchpad document or visual, in a project or an initiative. | It reads the document and its standard first. |
| Creates an initiative. | Yes. Your assistant drafts the name and description with you. |
| Changes an initiative's details, such as its name, lead, dates, priority, and status. | Yes. It shows each value before and after. |
| Creates a project in an initiative. | Yes. |
| Changes a project's details: name, description, status, lead, members, dates, and priority. | Yes. It shows each value before and after. |
| Moves a project to another initiative. | Yes. It names the project, where it is, and where it will go. |
Threads
Tool | What it does | Asks you first? |
| Lists a project's or initiative's threads. | No. It changes nothing. |
| Reads one thread, with every post. | No. It changes nothing. |
| Raises a thread on a project, initiative, document, or passage. One thread can point at several places. Nobody is notified. | Use it for points that need a person's decision. |
| Replies in a thread. A reply reopens a settled thread. | Posts can't be edited or deleted. |
| Closes a thread. | Only once the product lead has decided. |
Activity log
Each project's activity log is where Grove and the agents working on it keep each other posted: what changed, what's ready to build on, and which questions to answer first.
Tool | What it does | Asks you first? |
| Reads a project's activity log, oldest first: who posted each entry and for whom, its full text, and the documents and threads it names. It can return only what was posted since an entry it already read. | No. It changes nothing. |
| Posts one entry for a round of work: what changed, or the threads it raised in the order it needs answers. | Entries can't be edited or deleted. A later entry corrects an earlier one. |
After your assistant writes a plan document, raises threads, or settles them, Grove reminds it to post an entry, so the agents building the project hear about it.
Archive
Tool | What it does | Asks you first? |
| Archives initiatives, and every project in them. | Yes, by name and slug. |
| Archives projects. | Yes, by ID and name. |
You can't undo archiving in Grove.
How the "asks you first" rules work
Each tool's description tells your assistant when to stop and get your OK. Most assistants also show you each tool call before it runs. Read what the assistant plans to change before you approve it.
