Your product strategy is four shared documents on the Strategy page. Everyone in your workspace uses the same four. Grove reads them whenever it plans, so it can tell you when a new idea doesn't fit your strategy.
The four documents
Document | What it covers | Sections Grove fills in |
Target Personas | The main users of your product | For each persona: Role, Goals, Pain Points, Current Workflow, and What Success Looks Like. Then Persona Prioritization: which persona comes first, and why. |
Product Vision | Why the product exists, and what success looks like in 3 to 5 years | Why This Product Exists, The World We're Building Toward, Who Benefits, and What Makes This Possible Now |
Product Strategy | The step-by-step path from today to the vision | Current Position, Strategic Bets, Sequencing, and What We're NOT Doing |
Competitive Landscape | Your competitors, and how you're different | Market Overview. Then for each competitor: URL, Positioning, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Key Differentiator. Then Our Differentiation. |
A new workspace starts each document with one question in italics, such as "Who are the canonical users of this product?" Until someone writes more, the document counts as not filled in.
Start the setup
Do one of these:
From the setup checklist. If you're a workspace admin, go to the Queue. In Set up your product strategy, click Set up with Grove.
From the chat. Click Ask Grove in the bar at the bottom of the screen, and type "Help me set up our product strategy."
How Grove sets it up with you
Grove checks the four documents. It tells you which ones are already filled in, and which one it starts with.
Grove asks about your company. It asks what your company makes, who it's for, and what you already believe about the first document.
Grove asks what it may look at, such as your website, your docs, a connected repository, or competitors you name. Grove researches only what you agree to. If you pick Nothing, just talk, Grove writes from your answers alone.
Grove writes the document, and tells you in one line what it wrote.
Grove goes on to the next document. It works in this order: Target Personas, Product Vision, Product Strategy, Competitive Landscape.
Grove skips any document that is already filled in. If all four are filled in, it offers to sharpen one instead. It never starts over.
Stop and come back later
You don't have to do all four at once. To stop, close the question card, or just leave. To go on later, click Set up with Grove again, or ask Grove again. Grove reads the four documents first, so it picks up where they stand. This also works when another admin started the setup.
On the setup checklist, each finished document gets a check mark. The step is done when all four are filled in.
Keep your strategy up to date
Edit a document yourself. Go to Strategy, open the document, and type.
Ask Grove to change it. Open the document, and tell Grove what to add or sharpen.
Let Grove add to it while you plan. When you mention something during planning that applies to your whole product, such as a new type of user or a competitor, Grove adds it to the right document. It tells you in one line which document it changed.
If you skip the strategy
Grove still plans without it. But it can't check new ideas against your strategy, and it knows less about your users.
